The Future is Binary – Durham Regional Police responded to an Oshawa subdivision this afternoon after a citizen saw a man in a backyard wearing camouflage and holding a long gun. It turned out to be a teenager playing with his new pellet rifle.
On Thursday, July 3, 2014, at approximately 11:53 a.m., officers were dispatched to a residence on Pilgrim Square in the Simcoe Street North/Conlin Road area of Oshawa. A citizen saw a man moving in the backyard of a house, dressed in camouflage and brandishing what looked like a rifle. The male entered the house through the patio doors.
Officers attended and surrounded the residence. The Tactical Support Unit arrived and officers located the father of the male on the street, who explained his son just received a new pellet gun as a gift.
Contact was made and three young people were ordered out of the house through the front door. The 15-year-old male, his 14-year-old friend and his older sister, who were inside the house, followed police instructions and the incident ended peacefully at 12:42 p.m.
It became very clear there was no threat and that the teenager did not consider how his activity in the backyard would be interpreted by others.
There were no arrests and the young man has personally gone around the neighbourhood to apologize for his actions. The pellet rifle was handed over to police for destruction.
